Four Reasons You Should Leave Earwax Removal To a Professional Registered Nurse

We know its irresistible and widely popular to insert cotton buds or some other elongated object into your ears to remove wax, or try and dig out a foreign object……..this is never a good idea.  Just about any healthcare professional you talk to will agree. Below are four good reasons on why you should let one of our registered nurses do this, instead of doing it yourself.

You could cause permanent damage to your ears.

Trying to remove earwax by inserting a cotton bud (or anything else) into the ear can permanently damage the ear canal or eardrum. In addition, you might press clumps of earwax against the eardrum while you’re digging, which can lead to an ear infection.

Earwax removal is usually unnecessary.

The ear canal is naturally self-cleaning, requiring no routine maintenance thanks to its natural built-in process. Earwax is produced within the ear canal and naturally migrates from deeper inside to the outside with only a few exceptions, which includes individuals who produce more than the average amount of earwax, wear hearing

The presence of Earwax is not a sign of poor hygiene.

Earwax, or cerumen, provides a natural moisture to prevent the skin in the ear canal from becoming too dry. The quantity and makeup of earwax varies with ethnicity, age, environment, and even diet. Earwax is not a reflection of uncleanliness; in fact, it’s a sign of r normal healthy ears.

It could make your problem worse.

Because you can’t see what you’re doing, attempting to remove earwax yourself typically makes your earwax buildup problem worse. Rather than moving it out of your ear canal, cotton buds push clusters of wax together into a larger cluster, which plugs your ear and causes pain, pressure and muffled sound.

  • What is earwax?

Earwax (cerumen) is a yellowish waxy substance produced by healthy ears. Earwax protects the ear from bacteria, water, and foreign particles. It also assists in the cleaning and lubrication of the ear canal. Usually, excess wax is removed from the ear canal naturally when you talk or chew the ear wax moves the unwanted debris toward the outer ear canal, similar to sweeping dirt down your hallway floor. Once it comes to the opening, it falls out naturally without you even noticing, or you might see it in the mirror and clear it away.

If a buildup does occur, the earwax will become hard and block the ear.

  • What causes earwax blockage?

A blockage of earwax is usually caused by an overproduction of earwax or insufficient cleaning. Surprisingly, the most common cause of a blockage is incorrect at-home earwax removal using cotton swabs. Often, instead of cleaning out the earwax, it is just pushed deeper inside the ear. Earphone and ear plug usage can also cause wax buildup, as the earphones can prevent earwax from naturally coming out of the ear canal.

  • What are the symptoms of earwax blockage?

Earaches, a feeling of fullness in the ear, hearing loss, and ringing in the ear (tinnitus) are all common signs of earwax blockage. If the earwax is not removed, an infection can develop.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should talk to your doctor, as these may also be signs of a more serious condition.

  • How is earwax removal performed?

In order to diagnose a buildup of earwax, our nurses will look in your ear with a special magnifying instrument called an otoscope. Once diagnosed, they can remove the wax buildup a few ways: with a small curved instrument called a curet, through suction, or by flushing out the wax using a water pick or warm water. If this continues to be a problem, wax-removal medications may be recommended.  One of our GP’s will organise a prescription at no extra cost for you.
